Miss A did not like the dip, I've been using unhulled tahini & I was bit too liberal with the lemon, so it was a bit sour and strong . She did try it which is a first for her, she is not as enthusiastic about dips as many #igkids So I will #keeptrying because I'd like to increase her nuts & seeds intake, kids need all the fatty acids for their growing brains . Miss A did end up eating some cereal bikkies afterwards, she is a typical carb + protein loving kid, CARBS are NOT unhealthy, especially #wholefood ones, they are energy for both brain and body - something growing kids need . It's all about being #balancedforlife learning that we need a variety of nutrients from a variety of foods in various amounts . Do you CARROT all? 🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕 . Part One . I LOVE carrots, one of my favourite go to snacks I was once affectionally teased by my fellow TAFE mates as a bunny 🐰 . Unfortunately my Miss A does not share the same enthusiasm She has progressed from picking out even the smallest cooked piece to now eating grated or diced carrot. Mind you it's still cooked into things but now very obvious . Of course we know carrots are good for us, but... Did you know? . A recent 10 year study from the Netherlands shows that orange/yellow carrots are one of the most protective veggies against CVD (Cardio Vascular Disease ) . Apparently you only need to eat at least 1/4 cup of carrot a day to lower your risk! . Proof that you don’t need to be totally a totally gung-ho health freak to be healthy . Everyday, achievable amounts of fruit and vegetables makes a world of difference
Pancakes Everyday 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞 . #pancakeday - originally a way to use up all the sugar and butter before a period of fasting. Pancakes were considered a "rich food" (or less PC "fat food" 🙊 ) . Pfft 😝 pancakes are a staple in our house . My particular favourite recipe uses milk kefir which adds a nice tang and an extra protein probiotic boost . I usually flip a big batch and freeze them for Miss A's breakfasts & snacks . Served solo or with a smear of berry jam, a side of fresh or frozen berries and yoghurt . It's all about balance right?! Especially if you use wholemeal flour, low sugar, coconut oil and milk kefir 👍🏼 . 🥞🍓🥛🥞🍓🥛🥞🍓🥛
Up close and personal . The final instalment of my "why" . Once I realised I needed to adjust my focus away from stressing out whether Miss A is eating her broccoli or not And instead focusing on WHY and HOW to be healthy . That's when I started to work on my watercolour illustrations . I wanted to "reconnect" with how awesome fresh produce really is . I know that sounds pretty hippie but think about it, how can you appreciate the benefits of fresh fruit and veg when you don't really comprehend where they come from? I mean most of us buy our fresh produce from the same place we buy our toothpaste . A lot of kids have never been to a veggie farm or an orchard to see produce growing, it's that basic comprehension of "hey that grows from the ground" which helps kids see the difference between an apple and a packet of lollies . Even the educational system gets it, many schools have started their own school gardens to help facilitate that learning process . Because of this I wanted the magnets to be more illustrative basing them off scientific drawings. I hoped they would become an invitation to learn and grow . And for us they have. Each day I look at my fridge I am reminded that the effort it takes to choose to feed myself and my family healthy meals is worth it . They have challenged me to keep on making sure that I am stocking my fridge and pantry with healthy choices . I make an effort to explain HOW food affects our bodies and take the time to reflect back on the week (or month ) that was. What worked, what didn't and maybe more importantly give myself a pat on the back for my efforts, because who doesn't need a little "hooray you are being an awesome mum" pick me up?! . Afternoon snack time = Energy pick me up . These cacao peanut bliss balls aren't quite snickers level but considering their my first attempt without a recipe I'm pretty chuffed . Big hit with Daddy and I, Miss A not so much - yay more for us 🙊 . I think it's the texture of the coconut flour 🤔 . Interestingly she has rediscovered sultana bran & wants to eat it ALL day 🙈 . A behind the scenes glimpse EVERY magnet is hand cut by me ✂️✂️✂️ . Why bother with illustrative watercolour prints of fruit & veg? . Picking up the convo from my previous post . Because I realised that for us it wasn't enough just to have a general star sticker chart . The line drawings had helped us move away from the idea "be a good girl, eat this & get a star" . Instead I wanted to motivate her from the perspective of "this is good for me. I want to look after my body" . A view that is so much more powerful, don't you think? . I want my daughter to grow in her confidence of her ability to look after herself, be stable in her sense of self & her view of herself. . Learning the how and why of eating in a balanced and healthy way I feel is a fundamental part of this growth . I know first hand how hard it can be without those life skills early in life and having to learn them as an adult . Showing & teaching our kids what "Healthy" means NOW before they grow up is just as important (if not more ) as learning to read and write . It was these values that I realised needed to be my focus Instead of pointing the finger at my wilful child I needed to look at myself and change my approach to be more in harmony with what I really wanted for my daughter . OCD Mondays I love my little family But boy oh boy, after a week off kinder... Let's just say I am glad it's Monday! House is clean & tidy (thanks @danslittlerant 😘 ) Now it's time to #hustle I am excited to be a part of #celebratemelbourne with @motherhoodmelbourne and 49 other fantastic Melbourne makers . I was motivated to create something practical, eye catching & engaging after many months of battling the dinnertime fussies . It's SO hard to stay positive and motivated when it seems that every dinner was being picked at, spat out or flat out refused . We tried everything short of forcing food down her throat! I would scream inside myself "eat it damn it! Why don't you eat it?!" . It was a negative spiral, I would get stressed just getting dinner ready, dreading the struggle which of course just added fuel to the fire . I would be armed and ready for battle wanting to get it right every night 🙈 . I knew I didn't want to stifle her independent spirit by forcing my will on her & I knew how negative our approach was but I just didn't know how else to handle it . I read many comments from other parents who were SO much more relaxed about the whole thing & I wanted to get there too... BUT I did not want to give up on teaching her the value of learning to eat right . I started with simple line drawings stuck onto old fridge magnets . Of course they didn't last that long but they got us moving in the right direction, I started talking more about HOW fruit and vegetables are good for us instead of finger pointing "you should it this because..." 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 . Afternoon snack time . Miss A has always been my little ray of sunshine, so when she's not well it's like cloudy skies 🌥 . Today she came home wanting chocolate 🍫 ALL the chocolate 🍫 . Instead she quite happily settled on preparing herself strawberries and milo . (check out my Insta story for her cute video ) . She is currently eating with gusto, licking her fingers... 😍 . I think it might be safe to say her tummy is better 😊

Don't you just love a good double bounce 😂 . Our adjoining estate finished off their kids playground last week . FINALLY We have a play space & more importantly 3 in ground mini trampolines 🙌🙌🙌 . I intend to either bike ride or walk down there at every opportunity . Letting your inner child out & joining in with your kids on the playground is such a great way to reconnect with them & let your hair down . Do you have a local playground that you can go and have a swing or slide? YES I do mean YOU With your kids if you want 😂 . Seriously, it's really therapeutic to go and be a big kid & somehow at a playground you feel more "allowed" . Personally my favourite is the swing, I just love the sensation of reaching for the sky and whooshing through the air, I almost feel like I could fly It's almost like I swing my troubles away 😉
Eat your greens . Our fussy foods for 2017 🥕 get carrots across the line 🌱 GREENS . The biggest challenge to date will definitely be getting Miss A to eat any green veggies I know it will be a long process, for the last year I've been making a point of including a teaser portion of any side green veg For example tonight I didn't include kale on her plate but I did put a few beans (4 to be exact ) . Miss A is a slow burn, with EVERYTHING we have to pre pre prep her . The funny thing is that zucchini has crossed the line without much fuss 😂😂😂
#meatlessmonday *caution meat is discussed* . Growing up we very rarely ever ate a meatless dinner . We ate the Peruvian equivalent of meat and three veg Dad didn't think it was a proper meal if it didn't have meat and rice . Not to say we didn't have TASTY variety, mum hated cooking but she always managed to make delicious Peruvian flavoured food . Another contributing factor to my non vegetarian habits; Although on the other side of the world 🌎 Peruvian culture runs deep . I went back various times before grade one & I strongly believe that those formative years really impacted on my world view . My grandparents were building up their farm in the depths of Manu (Peruvian jungle ) Raising & catching 🦐 & 🐟, Milking your cows for your daily coffee Raising & butchering your dinner All the above was normal . I learnt so much about how to treat your environment and livestock with respect And how ingenuity and creativity can make even the seemingly impossible become reality . That authentic off the grid life was no hippie movement but rather what the reality was (and still is in many ways ) in remote areas You couldn't just order your groceries online & get your food delivered in neat sterile packaging with no connection to where it came from . So NO I'm not a vegetarian BUT 🍖 I am learning to cook more meatless meals 🥓 We eat smaller amounts of meat in ratio to the rest on our plate 🍗 I make a point to buy responsibly, fortunately for us this also includes buying organic meat from a local organic farm . Late last week as we were waiting for our restock to arrive, I challenged myself to cook with what I had & not just zip past woolies . This was what I made (mixed bean soup ) which although not a hit with my fussy eaters I thoroughly enjoyed & still have some for tomorrow's lunch 😋 . . . What's for dinner tonight at your place?

The grass is GREENEST where we WATER it . The quote above really resonates with me especially when I get caught up in the different stresses and frustrations that is parenthood and life . It can be so easy to wonder "why is my life so hard" 😩 "it's not fair" 😰 . To be brutally honest though, most of the time it's because we haven't taken a moment to stop, take a deep breath & water our own patch . Not literally of course 😂 . It's MAKING the time to do something that builds you and your family unit up . It doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes it's as simple as a picnic at a beautiful garden . The "water" that makes our life greener, happier, calmer more fulfilling is creating happy moments where we are present and connected with the ones we love . #throwbackthursday After our last heatwave in Melbourne we were all climbing our cool aircon'd walls 😱 . Daddy saved the day by packing a picnic and driving us to the gorgeous Alfred Nicholas memorial gardens in Sherbrooke which we had spotted on the lovely @mammaknowseast blog . It's amazing how getting out into nature, smelling the moist soil & letting our eyes soak in the greenery soothes frazzled souls . Especially this beautiful spot which was designed and landscaped during the early 1930s . Although my fibromyalgia did not respond well to the steep walk, I certainly felt more refreshed & the nagging "mummy guilt" was eased knowing we had watered our patch . . MILESTONE 21 days out of 22 . It amazes me how true the saying; PERSISTENCE PAYS is when it comes to creating new or improving on habits . Looking back on our journey, Miss A now will eat pumpkin happily & is almost eating carrot without fuss . She will also eat frozen blueberries now and is willing to try new fruits or vegetables . Tonight she poked at a piece of squash (which she had chosen herself ), refused her carrots but ate all her lentils and sneaky celery & tomato in her soup . What I love is seeing the progress we are all making: . ⭐️ Miss A is more conscious of what she is choosing to eat, especially when it comes to breakfast and snacks . ⭐️ My own more positive mindset meaning I am persisting with offering fruit and veg in different ways, even if I get a flat refusal it no longer deters me . The result? Our longest healthy eating streak yet! Only ONE ☝️ day during the school holidays! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 . Now we are back to routine (whoop whoop ) & my goal this year is to conquer carrots & start on tackling some version of leafy green . . Hmmm let's see how we go 😬😂 . H O T S O U P during a heat wave? . Crazy right? . When I was living in tropical South America, hydration I learnt is more than water & fruit juice . Our electrolyte levels take a beating during hot weather & one natural way of replenishing them is with soup . Tonight was a simple tomato soup with carrots and zucchini: 🍗Chicken bone broth 🍅Tinned tomatoes (organic chopped ) 🌱Basil 🌱Bay leaf 🥕Chunky carrot 🥒 Chunky zucchini Garlic Salt . At the table we added: Drizzle of Olive Oil Splash of Vinegar . . R E A L I T Y . After a big day yesterday my body has totally chucked a tanty . Daddy & Miss A are so understanding & supportive . Ease the mum guilt with ALWAYS having an easy back up that everyone eats happily & that fits in with your nutritional values . For us it's humble baked beans
B E R R I E S . . In my last post I mentioned that Miss A didn't eat her Broccoli . I wasn't fazed. We had enjoyed our post kinder afternoon at our local berry farm picking this fresh goodies . It's is fast becoming our little ritual every summer. I am a horse loving, farm, bare feet, beach hippy at heart (living in the 'burbs ) so I love getting to share these moments with my princess . . Bonus yesterday was that since Miss A's tummy is still off, the berries were the PERFECT snack . . I plan to do a post on how awesome they are real soon

Y U M M Y mummy breakie 😜 Out and about today & needed a power packed start . . I don't drink coffee (although I ❤️ it ) so I'm addicted to cacao instead . . My fix this morning: Cacao & Chia soaked in coconut water with banana & cinnamon. For crunch I added cacaco nibs. For something creamy I added maple peanut butter. 😋 . . #breakfastbowl #fructosefriendly #dessertforbreakfast
🎉🎉🎉🎉 . Miss A actually tried the one sprig of watercress I put on her plate!!! . She commented on how Daddy had so many on his plate so she gave it a try... Ended up spat out on the floor 😐 which I understand, I mean watercress is super peppery. . So despite the slip in table manners & only eating her potatoes, I give her 10/10 . Considering she has a tender tummy from the horrible tummy bug, I was super impressed. . A win for us tonight!
