A grown man who murders 17 children and teachers and wounds 14 others gets taken alive. A child playing in the park gets murdered by police seconds from their arrival. The issues in our country are Black and white.
I’m gonna say this loudly (as someone has worked for “big org” and been complicit in this ): We need to STOP co-opting movements. As a person who lost a friend in the mass shooting at Pulse I am speaking as an actual victim of mass shooting asking that folks stop being selfish and start centering the voices of those most affected. This isn’t an opportunity for list growth and publicity this is a beautiful and growing call for gun control coming from the future of our country—who are fighting for the future today. I’m sick of our current celebrity activism culture (and I’ve been a major beneficiary of it ). MLK wasn’t trying to get on the cover of magazines he was trying to SURVIVE and help other people survive as well. I’m gonna have to start saying this every day: IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. It’s not about me. It’s about all of US. This movement can’t be about recognition. It can’t be about performance. It HAS to be a collective effort to survive and thrive that is rooted in the experiences of the people most affected. I have personally written to the Women’s March about this and got a one sentence shut-down response. I implore you all to write to them on their Instagram or Twitter and ask them to center the voices of these powerful students.
To be clear: The solution to dismantling systems of oppression isn’t to create new ones. The future is equality, equality that isn’t predicated on gender identity, race, or sexual identity. Just equality. The only way to dismantle oppression is to work against the traditional power dynamics that exist in our world—not to conform to them. Our binary way of thinking will be our downfall. It’s time that we stop looking at the world through our eyes and instead look through the collective gaze of the people around us. The second that you realize that your activism isn’t about you is when you will succeed. And to folks who identify with the resistance please know that the leaders at the top don’t represent you. The majority of the names you know don’t know you or your struggles. They don’t really fight the fights you think they do. They’re not what you see on social media. They’re flawed people with flawed intentions. We have to be our own leaders. We have to fight for each other. The future is US. The future is our collective energy. The future isn’t one thing—it’s all things. -BOK
Spare me the false outrage. I have seen my friends slain in a mass shooting. I’ve stopped believing that Congress will ever fix it.
My best friend and #1 on Valentines Day and every day.
Mom: Can we take a picture in front of the Statue of Liberty? Me: You won’t be able to see it. Mom: Can we just try? *We just tried
Send this to a white person today.
This really pissed me off. Our society breeds a culture of disordered eating and negative self image.
A lot of people don’t realize how much taller I am than Matt haha.
My beautiful momma is in town <3
There’s a Martin Luther King quote that goes something like “It’s all right to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his.” Us folks with boots can forget what it’s like walking around barefoot. It’s time we get in the business of handing out boots y’all.
You wanna know the real tea? White millionaire women are often complicit in just as much oppression as comparable men. Oppression is not about genitalia or even gender. It’s about power. The audacity of the white feminist movement to center stories of powerful women instead of REAL people who aren’t negotiating their wages in millions, who aren’t protected from street harassment by security guards, who don’t have nannies watching their kids, it’s shocking. If your feminism isn’t Intersectional then it’s not feminism. Because these are the same feminists who say “all men are terrible” “we need only female leaders” “trans women don’t get it. They have ‘former male privilege.’” All genders deserve an equal shot at success and safety in our society. Check your privilege. Your experiences are valid (I get it. I am a queer person with a trans feminine partner we have our own experiences that fall into the fights of the feminist movement ) but they should be used as a vehicle to help others not to gain undue pity for your otherwise privileged life. SIT DOWN. Also take your racist suffragette white roses off—you’re making your white feminism too obvious.
